Crier Recruiting Corner: Introducing 2027 5 Star King Gibson

I was admittedly shocked to hear the news of 5 star combo guard King Gibson setting up an official visit this upcoming weekend to Providence. Gibson, a North Carolina native, is playing his senior season at SPIRE Academy. He previously played at Monteverde under Kevin Boyle and followed him to SPIRE.

Just like another five star guard in his class in Nasir “Rudy” Anderson, he’ll have his pick of any school he desires.

The SPIRE Academy angle is one I’m particularly watching, as his 2027 teammates are Friar targets in Micah Gordon and Moussa Kamissoko. Elite players want to play alongside elite players, and I don’t think the pursuit of this trio who go to the same prep school is a mere coincidence.

While it’s still very early in this recruitment, getting Gibson to commit to an official visit is a big deal. These visits being scheduled reinforce that Hodgson and staff can recruit with the best of the best. It’s nice press clippings at the introductory press conference to hear about the recruiting prowess of your coach, but Hodgson is showing he can back up those words with actions and outcomes. It seems like every other day Providence is getting a 4 or 5 star to visit campus, and Hodgson has already landed a four and five star out of high school in Clyde Walters and Javon Bardwell, respectively. This is going to be the norm going forward I believe.

Player Profile

King is everything you want in a combo guard. He has great size and length at 6’4 and 185 pounds. He is an extremely athletic guard who can elevate with an ease that is a rarity to see. There is a reason he is a 5 star, Top 10 player in his class, and it’s because he combines a high skill talent with superb athleticism.

He has a smooth jumper, displaying a comfort level knocking down shots both coming off screens or off the dribble.

It is not just a three ball or attack the rim offense for him either. He can operate in the mid-range and really defines what a three level scorer plays like. Ironically, his mid-range game may be the part of his offense that stands out the most. It’s an aspect of basketball that has been shelved by the analytics nerds, so seeing somebody possess this skill set always jumps off the page to me.

I would say he is more two guard than lead guard at this point. If I were building a team around him, he’s going to find the most amount of success playing off-ball rather than being the true point for your team. He can absolutely run the show, but I don’t think that is where he currently fits best on the floor right now. Adam Finkelstein in his evaluation of Gibson actually echoes these sentiments, which makes me feel good that my eyes aren’t deceiving me.

Recruiting Overview

Gibson’s recruitment will probably come down to the Duke Blue Devils, Connecticut Huskies, UNC Tar Heels, or Arkansas Razorbacks. All are recruiting him. Good luck, Coach Hodgson.

He has a long list of visits this fall, but I do like Providence locking in an official visit next weekend. Make an impression early and plant the seed in the heads of the SPIRE triumvirate of playing together in college.

Summary

When Gibson cut his list to 10 schools, and PC was included, I fully admit I dismissed Providence being contenders. The elite of the elite are recruiting Gibson. With the official visit scheduled, my eyebrows have been raised. Lastly, after doing research on Gibson, where he plays, and who he plays with, I am on board with giving the Friars a fighting chance.

Even if these visits don’t materialize into commitments, this transfer portal world is one where you need to develop relationships for the long term even if you don’t land these kids out of high school. Thus, I commend Hodgson and staff for taking big cuts at the proverbial plate with these elite recruits. You never know what will happen with a player’s career, and they may consider a Providence if their first college choice doesn’t pan out as expected.

It’s still so early, but I’m sold on Gibson as a player and option for the Friars.
