Triston Hawthorne, the 123rd ranked prospect in the Class of 2027 per 247Sports, cut his list of schools to six today and the Friars were included. Hawthorne is a big man who is a bit undersized at 6-8 but his 7-4 wingspan more than makes up for it. He is viewed as one of the best defensive prospects in the class and continues a trend with Coach Hodgson and staff. While known for having a modern offense that can put up points, Hodgson has made it clear that defense will not be put on the backburner. We have seen this through the way he built the current Friar roster from scratch and with the offers and visits of prospects within his first high school recruiting class at Providence.
We break down his game below.
When you watch tape of Hawthorne his length absolutely stands out. He turns his long wingspan into an elite shot blocking ability and could be an anchor protecting the rim as soon as he arrives to college. His length combined with his athleticism figure that he can be used out on the perimeter as a defender as well.
On the offensive side of the basketball, he will basically make his living as a lob threat and can score points off offensive rebound put backs. His limited offensive game likely holds him back from being ranked in the Top-100 in the Class of 2027 but with his elite defensive prospects Hawthorne should be an impact player at the college level.
His list of six schools includes the two of the hometown schools in Ole Miss and Mississippi State, Houston, LSU, Harvard, and Providence. Houston appears to be the favorite as he has already gone on official visit to the Cougars back on August 20th. He also seems to fit exactly what Coach Sampson is looking for.
Over the years the Cougars have employed guys like Joseph Tugler, J’Wan Roberts, Jarace Walker, and Fabian White Jr to anchor a defensive unit that has dominated the college game. He actually reminds me of a smaller Chris Cenac Jr but doesn’t have the shot making prospects that saw the Boston Celtics select Cenac Jr in the first round of this past year’s NBA draft.
Hawthorne also has official visits scheduled to both LSU and Harvard in the coming weeks and has yet to put something on the calendar for the other three schools in his list. Again, I would think that Houston is the team to beat in his recruitment, but we shall see if Coach Hodgson and staff can get Hawthrone on campus. We will certainly be monitoring his recruitment going forward.
