In Bryan Hodgson’s first high school recruiting class since taking the job at Providence don’t be surprised if ‘The Shark” is looking to make a splash or two. Asa Montgomery would certainly qualify as that as the 6-6 wing is considered one of the better players in the Class of 2027. Montgomery will be taking a visit to Friartown this fall.
Montgomery is a wing out of Powder Springs, GA where he plays for Hillgrove High School. If you recall former Friar Kadeem Batts finished his high school career in Powder Springs, albeit for Hillgrove’s rival McEachern High School. Montgomery checks in as the 42nd overall recruit in the Class of 2027 per 247Sports however several other recruiting services have him rated higher including ESPN who slot him as the 26th rated player in their SC Top 100.
We break down his game below.
His game was certainly good enough to gain USA Basketball’s attention as he helped lead the FIBA U17 national team to gold in the FIBA U17 World Cup in Istanbul this summer.
Montgomery is a springy and long wing man. His wingspan checks in at 6-10 and he uses length and bounce to impact both sides of the basketball. He combines his athleticism with a reliable three-point jumper and is a good cutter of the basketball. He seems to just have a nose for the basketball, which is evident by his ability to block shots, take the ball away and grab offensive rebounds.
Adam Finklestein of 247Sports in his evaluation noted that on the EYCL AAU circuit Montgomery averaged 29.7 ppg on 54% from the floor, 34% three and 76% from the charity stripe. He also averaged 10.2 rebounds per game, but when he was with Team USA, he was more of a role player. It shows that he can come into college and take a role with a team early while he fully develops at the next level. It also shows he is willing to sacrifice in order to win which is a great characteristic.
It’s no surprise that Coach Hodgson would be after a player like Montgomery. We’ve seen him prioritize the wing position with the roster him and his staff have put together this offseason. Last I checked Myles Byrd will exhaust his eligibility after this season, although these days who’s to say. He’s long and he gets after it on both sides of the ball, similar to what Myles Byrd can do.
Asa Montgomery is set to officially visit Providence on September 18th, which may not mean as much as it used to considering players now have unlimited visits but it’s certainly a positive sign. Acquiring a commitment from Montgomery certainly won’t be easy however. He also has visits to LSU, Duke, Florida, UConn, UNC, Arizona, and Louisville thus far and he’s been offered by basically everyone.
We’ve heard the stories of Hodgson smelling blood in the water on the recruiting trail and winning commitments, getting one from Montgomery would certainly add to that lore. Landing Montgomery would be a big win, and one would assume he could recruit other top prospects to join him. One thing is for certain and that is we will be monitoring this one at the Crier over the next few months.
