Big East point guards have a certain reputation: brash, cocky, and downright tenacious. Khalid El-Amin, Ryan Arcidiacono, Kemba Walker, Kris Dunn, Jalen Brunson. You can even reference old school Big East points that embody this spirit like a Levance Fields, Peyton Siva, or Johnny Flynn. All guys that epitomize the Big East way of running the show for their teams with a certain flair to their game.
Micah Gordon is what a Big East point guard looks and plays like. The stout 5’10 New Jersey point guard has been tearing up the high school and AAU scene for years and has emerged as one of the top point guards in the 2027 class.
Micah has a busy fall schedule, visiting 8 schools throughout August, September, and October. Providence gets the final visit the weekend of October 16th and is looking to find its point guard of the future.
We break down his game and recruitment below.
Recruiting Profile
Gordon is the 33rd ranked player nationally, a 4 star hailing from the Garden State. He played for Plainfield for a few years, but is going to play his senior ball for renowned high school coach Kevin Boyle at SPIRE Academy (Derkack did that last year, if you recall).
He’s the #5 ranked point guard in a loaded point guard class that probably has a few guards ahead of him who will be one and done lottery picks.
If you look at the schools pursuing him, it’s a host of top end schools in Tennessee, Auburn, UCLA, and UConn, amongst others. It’s still so early in the recruitment, but you’d have to imagine the Huskies as the favorite. The Hurley name may as well be religion in New Jersey high school basketball circles (deservedly so), and Tri-State prep players grow up idolizing Big East basketball and playing at places like The Garden.
As a junior, he showed off his well rounded playstyle, averaging 25 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and close to 3 steals.
Providence as of this writing has the final visit, and that is a noteworthy development. If Gordon doesn’t commit anywhere prior to the PC visit, the Friars give themselves a fighting chance.
Analyzing Play Style
Gordon is a pitbull for a point guard. If you were to draw up what a Big East point guard looks and plays like, it’s Micah Gordon. He’ll never be a “first off the bus” guy who wows you with his measurables, but he plays with an edge that not many possess.
He is well-built and doesn’t back down from a challenge. His tenacious attitude on the court is infectious to his teammates. He’s a player you want leading your team and hate playing against him when he’s on the other team. A pest in the best of ways.
He uses his physicality and build to absorb contact when attacking the rim and fending off defenders with ease. While smaller in height and length, he makes up for it with his solid build. He has the ability to finish with either hand, although his right hand is his dominant one. Because he is undersized, he has found ways to be crafty around the rim with his finishing ability.
His mid-range game is nice, particularly his ability to consistently make a floater. That is going to be a useful skillset in college, as it’s one a lot of college guards don’t have in their toolkit.
Gordon also shows the ability to knock down the deep ball. I personally think he’s at his best when driving, but his shooting ability is there. It’s not a weakness in his game, and that is very important.
He’s a good distributor of the basketball as lead guard too. I think at this point in his career he is scorer first, assist guy second, but that doesn’t mean the skillset isn’t there.
What I like most about him as a potential future leader of the Friars is his winning pedigree. He is a two time state champion, which is no small feat in New Jersey, especially as an underclassman. He led his Plainfield team to a #1 ranking in New Jersey as a junior. That is the first time a public school has been ranked #1 in Jersey end of year since 2000.
He’s received individual accolades as well, winning New Jersey POY. He is also his school’s leading scorer despite not playing there as a senior. Lastly, I like that he accomplished everything he needed to accomplish in New Jersey and is now challenging himself to play at the highest prep level at SPIRE under Boyle. He’ll be a better and more Day 1 ready college player because of it, as SPIRE will go on a nation wide tour playing against the elite of the elite.
Summary
Gordon is the type of recruit that Roy Williams and Jay Wright routinely landed to keep their dynasties humming. It is the guy that is a borderline elite recruit (ranked in the 20-60 range nationally), but said player lacks the “NBA physical traits”. Because of this, they play in college for 3-4 years and dominate at the collegiate level for multiple years.
Gordon doesn’t have elite size, but he’s a near perfect college player. He has a really good basketball IQ and never seems to be in a hurry on the court. He is a consummate leader, alpha on the court, and point guard that you love having on your team. He can score, distribute, and defend.
He was born to play in the Big East, and I’m hopeful Hodgson can get him in our locker room before somebody like Hurley or Pitino gets him in conference for themselves.
Gordon is on my short list for favorite player of the 2027 class. He brings immense value with his skillset, but his best traits are his leadership and winning ability. You need these players on your team to instill winning habits.
