Coach Bryan Hodgson and staff have built out a robust fall official visit schedule. The Providence staff will have a plethora of 4 star recruits on campus from September on.
To the surprise of many, Providence fans received notification that the duo of Moussa Kamissoko and Micah Gordon unofficially visited Providence on 8/24.
Gordon is scheduled for an official visit in the fall while Kamissoko received an offer from the Friars in early June. With the summer offer and unofficial visit, the interest from the Kamissoko camp appears to be real, and we wanted to take the time to break down the elite wing’s game.
Player Recruiting Profile
The Long Island Lutheran product plays AAU ball for the PSA Cardinals alongside Gordon. He is a 5 star, 15th ranked overall player nationally, and #1 player in New York. Kamissoko is all of 6’7 and 180 pounds with a near 7 foot wingspan.
He received recent offers earlier this summer from BYU and Connecticut. The Huskies will be a perennial thorn in the side for all teams when it comes to high major Northeast talent, while I’m keeping an eye on BYU due to how similarly Kamissoko plays like one of their former players now in The League. At the risk of stating the obvious, he’ll be able to choose any school he wants to play at.
Player Analysis
Kamissoko is a wiry and springy wing that are all the rage in the NBA today that trickles down to the collegiate and prep levels. Not many are built like him with his height, length, and athleticism to boot.
You can’t help but watch his tape and see shades of Dybanasta. He plays above the rim, he’s fluid with the ball in his hands, and he can attack the hoop with ease while finishing through contact all while being 6’6+.
The term “point forward” gets thrown around a lot, but he can handle the rock in a half court setting and seems extremely comfortable playing isolation and getting to where he wants to be on the court. He comes across to me as having an advanced offensive game for somebody still in high school, and that is probably why he is a 5 star.
A lot of the high end recruits in high school are producing due to their superior athleticism, effective primarily due to their run and jump game in transition. Kamissoko stands out to me because he is lethal in transition, but is just as effective in a half court where he needs to create on his own. As I mentioned above, that’s rare these days.
What he’ll need to improve on is putting on some bulk and size before heading to college. He can body his competition now in the mid-range and paint, but he’ll have to put on some muscle to be as effective in college as he is currently. He can use his senior year of high school to stack mass before entering college.
Fit With Friars
Providence has a fighter’s chance with the summer offer followed by the unofficial visit. Who knows if it was merely to accompany Gordon on his visit, but it’s a positive sign regardless. The next step will be getting Kamissoko to commit to an official visit this fall, and we can then start dreaming of Hodgson landing a five star in his first recruiting class.
If Kamissoko were to choose the Friars, there is no guarantee he’d be starting Day 1. He’d be competing with Vanterpool, Walters, and Mela for playing time. In my opinion, not needing him to be the savior Day 1 is a good thing and sign of a healthy roster. Let’s hope this is a talk track next year.
