2025 Shooting Guard Jaylen Harrell Commits to Providence – Kim English Honing in on Elite 2025 Class

The next shoe dropped for Providence basketball. Sharpshooting wing Jaylen Harrell of Massachusetts committed to Providence, choosing the Friars over the likes of Xavier, Rutgers, and Alabama. For Providence, this commitment of the consensus 4 star recruit adds to an already amazing 2025 class. With Harrell’s commitment, Providence now has 2 Top 100 recruits, with 1 of the 2 in the Top 35 nationally.

With Harrell’s commitment, the 2025 class is well diversified on the wing, containing a slashing big bodied wing and marksman 2 guard from deep. It has high end talent spread out across multiple positions.

The natural comparison fans will make is to AJ Reeves. Yes, they both come in as highly touted shooting guards who played their prep ball in New England, but the comparisons probably should end there. That’s only fair to both Harrell and Reeves.

Reeves, to me, is the superior athlete, but we never saw that raw athleticism translate and come to fruition at PC. I think it’s fair to say that Reeves was probably more Day 1 ready than Harrell will be when he enrolls.

Harrell can shoot like Reeves can, but seems to have a more well rounded game. He can attack off the dribble, post his man up, and finish in the mid range. The Crier mentioned this to me in passing, but it is fair to say Reeves didn’t live up to his expectations coming out of high school. One may wonder how the career of Reeves would have gone if he played under somebody like English.

With the Harrell commitment, the only missing piece to the 2025 class is a successor to Jayden Pierre as point guard. Providence, with all of the talent committed to the 2025 class, should be able to have its pick of the litter at point guard. Talent wants to play with talent, and Providence’s last few commitments are as follows: a Top 40 big man, a Top 35 wing, and Top 100 two guard. That has to be appealing if you are a point guard.

One name to keep an eye on for me is Jalen Reece. Reece is notably the teammate of Jamier Jones, but make no mistake: this kid is an elite talent and is torching the AAU scene currently. English was also recently down in Florida leading a camp, which I’m sure was no coincidence.

I’ve said this on past podcasts, but please don’t overlook how important this commitment is for Providence. Even though Harrell may not be as highly ranked as Oswin and Jamier, he may be the most crucial commitment of the 2025 class. What was Providence’s biggest issue last year? Shooting. If you want to pinpoint Harrell as being superb at any one trait, it’s that. His skillset is a match made in heaven for how English wants to run an offense.

If things hold and Providence adds a 4 star point guard, their 2025 class will finish at worst as a Top 20 class in the country. It can balloon to Top 10 possibly depending on senior seasons. Let’s not forget that this class was #1 overall in 2025 before Oswin reclassified.

These are different times at Providence. Enjoy it, Friar fans. Providence is coming.
