Crier Portal Guide Spotlight- Miami Guard Bensley Joseph

If you’ve following along the recruiting articles from the blog the past several years, Bensley Joseph is a name you should remember. The former Putnam Science and Cushing Academy guard had the Friars in his final 5 back in 2021. He ultimately chose to play for the Miami Hurricanes, where he has spent the past three seasons prior to entering his name in the transfer portal this past March.

Below, we break down his college career to date and what he would bring to the Friars.

Despite a different coaching staff from the one who recruited him in high school, the Friars are once again in pursuit to land his services. Joseph started in 27 of 32 games for the Hurricanes this past season and had to play a large role when starting PG Nigel Pack got injured.

Joseph has shown progression over his first three years in Coral Gables and this past season averaged 9.2 ppg with 3.4 rpg & 3.4 apg. Joseph stands at 6-2, and you can slot him at either guard spot. He’s best when he’s driving down hill and attacking the rim but has shown to be a respectable shooter from deep, especially on catch and shoot. Joseph is also a plus on the defensive side with 1.5 steals per contest and even had 4 blocks in a game against UCF this past November.

Jayden Pierre figures to be the Friars starting point guard of the future but PC could still really use a guy like Joseph. English said he wants competition across the roster, and this does that for Pierre. Last season showed that Providence lacked depth at guard, with no true back up point guard. This isn’t to say Joseph would come in as a backup either. As stated earlier he can slide into either guard spot and PC could use the ability to show different lineup combinations.

Bensley Joseph has been to the Final Four, and that experience is invaluable. Despite the subpar year this past year for Miami, Joseph has been around a winning culture at Miami, and that can pay off in late game situations and crunch time. Think about Al Durham and what he was able to do for the Friars in their Sweet 16 run.

Joseph also only having one year of eligibility likely doesn’t lead to Pierre entering the portal, which is vitally important to this roster with Dual transferring.

If Providence can land a guy like Bensley Joseph, it would be a great start towards rebuilding the roster via the portal. Another lead guard to split duties with Pierre at point is one of the needs for this offseason. Kim English said he was going to have 13 dudes next season and wouldn’t get caught again with depth issues. Bensley Joseph certainly qualifies as a dude with college experience who could be a mentor of sorts to Pierre.
