Kim English and staff continue to tap into the New England pipeline on the recruiting trail, particularly in the 2026 recruiting class. We’ve already seen them host a few New England guys like Ryan Moesch and Abdou Toure on official visits, and Alex Egbuonu is the next on the list.
Alex Egbuonu is a 6-6 forward from Nashua, New Hampshire by way of Nigeria and currently plays for Lawrence Academy in Lawrence, MA. Egbuonu plays AAU for BABC and has seen his stock skyrocket over the Summer of 2026. Egbuonu is ranked as the 74th overall prospect in the 2026 class according to the 247 Composite, but I’d expect that ranking to (potentially dramatically) improve after a stellar AAU showcase at the Adidas All American Camp where he was named Offensive MVP. He is a relatively new name in the 2026 class for PC fans to know, which is surprising given his proximity to Providence, but I’d expect the interest in Egbuonu to ramp up as his official visit to Friartown approaches at month’s end.
Egbuonu unofficially visited June 26th and has his official visit on September 26th. There are a bevy of schools pursuing him, notably Auburn and Marquette.
We detail his game and recruitment below.
Egbuonu is all of 6-6 and has a frame that is prototypical of a hybrid wing. He still appears to growing into his body but possesses plenty of traits that make him a promising prospect. He has good instincts in transition, has solid finishing ability around the rim, appears to posses a solid spot up jumper on the perimeter and has a nice post up game that typically results in him knocking down fadeway mid-range shots. On the defensive end he gets after it on the glass for his size and shows an ability to shot block while keeping the ball in play.
Egbuonu visited Providence unofficially in June, but has an official visit at the end of September. He joins Abdou Toure and Ryan Moesch as New England prospects that the Friars are in hot pursuit of on the recruiting trail in the 2026 class. Egbuonu is considered the third best player in the 2026 class for the State of Massachusetts behind a familiar name in Quinn Costello and directly above Ryan Moesch.
We have seen Providence start to hone in on the New England pipeline of late by adding Ryan Mela, Oswin Erhunmwunse, and Jaylen Harrell in the last two recruiting cycles. It certainly is a wise strategy considering prospects in the area certainly are more familiar with the program than guys outside of the area and some of Providence’s best players over the years have come from the New England. AJ Reeves (Roxbury, MA), David Duke Jr (Providence, RI), Kris Dunn (New London, CT), Carson Derosiers (Windham, NH), Ryan Gomes (Waterbury, CT), and Ernie D (North Providence, RI) were all local recruits.
As for Alex Egbuonu, we do have some questions on how he will project at the next level. He isn’t the most explosive athlete and again there’s something about watching his tape I cant quite put my finger on. Totally guessing here but it seems like he recently had a growth spurt and is still trying to learn how to play in his new frame. He seems like a guy that won’t make an immediate impact in college but after some development can turn into a really productive collegiate player.
Egbuonu would appear to slide into the 3/4 position. That area is well stocked on the Friar roster, but Kim English may be evaluating this player as a luxury add. Given the volatility of the portal, it is always an astute strategy to have multiple options.
Could Alex Egbuonu be another great Friar from New England? We’ll see how his recruitment progresses.
Alex Egbuonu Analysis – 9/10 Update from BOC
I thought the Crier did a very fair and objective job of analyzing Egbuonu’s game when he originally published this recruiting article in late June. I too had legitimate questions about his skillset, fit with Providence, and how his game would translate to the Big East.
After watching a few highlights of him this summer and reading up on some scouting reports by national recruiting folks much more astute than me, I think Egbuonu has made that jump I was hoping to see.
Physically, he seems to have leaned out a bit and put on some more muscle, which helps with the athleticism and quickness he has possessed of recent. His lower body is as sturdy as they come. He has tree trunks for legs, and I’m sure that helps with rebounding and finishing through contact.
I look at him more as an undersized 4 than a stereotypical wing. While that may not translate professionally, one of our former players Bryce Hopkins made a living playing bully ball as an undersized 4 that used his strength to beat up on smaller defenders while using his quickness to blow by defenders that were your classic frontcourt players. Somebody like a Dajuan Blair or Bonzie Colson comes to mind too potentially. His stats at the Adidas All-American camp back up this claim, as he shot 70% from the floor and will likely be a foul-line player in who makes his living on drives to the hoop, points at the free throw line, and put-backs on the glass.
As of this writing, I’d imagine Marquette and Auburn to be in the driver seat, but Providence can absolutely change that after his official visit at month’s end. This is when recruiting gets exciting.
