Providence ended Friday with three new commitments on a historic portal day, with Sellers a Friday evening addition to the commitments of Jason Edwards and Stefan Vaaks earlier in the day. Sellers chose the Providence Friars over Illinois, Georgetown, and Cincinnati. The UCF guard was injured for most of this past year, but prior to the injury has been a dynamic two way guard at both Ball State and Central Florida. Sellers brings size, tenacity, shooting, and athleticism to the back-court.
With this addition, Providence is likely one portal addition away from a complete roster. That addition is presumably a high level 4 man in the frontcourt.
We break down the game of Sellers and how he fits with the Friars.
College Production
2024-2025: 3 games played due to back injury
2023-2024 (UCF): 32 mins/game, 42% FG, 30% from 3, 4 rebounds, 16 points/game
2022-2023 (Ball State): 30 mins/game, 45% from 3, 49% FG, 4 rebounds, 14 points/fame
2021-2022 (Frosh Ball State): 44% from 3, 66% FT, 7 points/game
Analyzing His Game
The best word to describe his playstyle: angry. He plays with an edge where he wants to rip the rim off the backboard on dunks and bury his opponent when given the chance. He runs hot, and I love that.
Crier and I have lamented that Providence had too many “nice guys” last year, and Sellers will bring an attitude adjustment to the locker room in the best of ways. He and Hargrove both play the game the same way, albeit at different positions. There is zero timidness to either of their games.
Sellers plays above the rim and thrives in transition. The lefty plays with force. Once the engine gets going, he’s hard to stop. He’s explosive.
While you see his highlights of throwing down dunks and think that’s his primary offensive game, it is easy to typecast him as an athlete who simply produces at the rim.
Don’t make the mistake of overlooking his sweet shooting stroke. At Ball State in two years, he shot 45% from 3 (wow). In his first season at UCF, he came back down to earth and shot 30% from 3. I’d guess he falls somewhere in the middle this year at Providence, and a wing who shoots 35-38% from deep for Providence this year will absolutely be a double digit scorer. Despite his 30% from 3 in his first year in the Big 12, he still was able to average 16 points/game in the Big 12.
Beyond his three point shooting prowess, he is a true three level scorer. He thrives in the mid range on pull-ups and fadeaways. He has the Harden step-back for 3. He really is a well-rounded offensive player.
Fit With the Friars
Sellers brings a lot to the Friars backcourt and wing: athleticism, size, and shooting. Providence has guys that possess one or two of those traits. Sellers has all three. He improves the room dramatically.
I think folks question how he fits into wing rotation. I initially said I thought this was a luxury add rather than a necessity add. After reflecting a bit, I may have to walk that back.
I’m personally looking forward to seeing Sellers and Floyd Jr. play alongside each other at the 2-3 positions. They both have incredible size at 6’4-6’5 and are well built athletes. They should be absolute pests defensively and bullies offensively. Gang rebounding with these two at the 2-3 will lead to getting the ball out in transition and also attaining second chance offensive opportunities.
Those two working against each other in practice will be reminiscent of Oklahoma drills in August two-a-day practices. They’re both going to be better by playing alongside and against each other in practice. Iron sharpens iron. They possess a lot of similar traits.
The size of Sellers helps quell the concerns of the suboptimal size of Edwards and Davis. I wrote in my article on Edwards that you need to pair those two guys above with a bigger body in the backcourt and now they can do that with Sellers and/or Floyd.
The other main question about Sellers is his health. Is he truly healthy and ready for the rigors of the Big East? We’ll see. A back injury is no joke and one that can often linger. The silver lining about the Bryce Hopkins saga is that it appears the staff learned not to build around a guy coming off a season ending jury. The difference is Sellers is A GUY in the rotation, not THE GUY like Bryce was. If Sellers goes down with an injury, it hurts this team, but won’t torpedo the season. Lessons learned.
What’s Next
The portal is a hurricane. You eagerly await decisions, and they hit you all at once. That’s what happened Friday.
Providence has had an eye-opening portal offseason in terms of fitting needs. They have landed a depth 4/5 piece to back-up Oswin at the 5 and whomever is the starting 4. Hargrove may even threaten to start at the 4!
Edwards and Davis satisfy the requirement of replenishing the backcourt with two ball handlers. Davis is the PG of the future and will end up being a multi-year starter for the Friars.
Edwards is the first portal commit of his kind for the Friars. He was a high production high major player that schools like Duke and Kentucky normally land. Expectations SHOULD be high for him. Normally, Providence lands role players from high major programs or high production players from the mid-majors. Edwards is a high production, high major guy. Be excited.
Sellers adds firepower at the wing with his scoring and shooting ability.
Providence had a season to forget last year, and a lot of that was predicated around building a team around one player. English has learned from that mistake and can now presumably rely on 4-5 different offensive threats in a given night.
The portal period isn’t over yet for PC, and they may add one more frontcourt piece to put them over the top.
At the end of the day, Providence is giving Kim English everything he needs to succeed in Friartown. There will be heightened expectations and with that no wiggle room for excuses. Providence is going all-in on this upcoming season, and I commend them for doing that for this staff.
