With the 2024-2025 season mercifully coming to a close, The Providence Crier has begun to shift its focus to all things recruiting. Providence is in the mix with a host of stellar recruits, notably 2026 local recruit Abdou Toure. The Connecticut wing playing at Notre Dame Prep is a consensus Top 50 recruit and recently visited Providence in their last match-up at home against Connecticut. If you recall, Providence also had on an official visit 2026 4-star big man Marcis Ponder. Toure was also in attendance for the PC win against BYU earlier in the year, so his interest isn’t one of simply being courteous to a local school that offered him.
Kim English is trying to follow up stellar 2024 and 2025 recruiting classes with another fruitful 2026 class, as he seemingly realizes the importance of landing high school talent that can be the foundation for your program for several years.

Despite the proximity to Friartown, Toure will be an incredibly difficult recruit to land. The hometown Huskies are heavily involved with this recruitment, and I’m certain their recent success and staying in state weigh heavily in this recruitment. The Clingan effect.
What’s more impressive is that coaches like Calipari are entering this recruitment. Calipari recognizes high school talent with the best of them.
Below, we’ll break down this recruitment, how Providence fits into the mix, and where Toure would play within the rotation.

Recruitment Overview
https://247sports.com/player/abdou-toure-46150813/
The 247 composite has Toure as a consensus 5 star player. He is 23 overall nationally. This would be the highest ranked commitment of the English era, which is saying something given he’s landed blue chip recruits like Oswin, Jamier, and Jaylen.
Toure is the number one ranked player in the state of Connecticut. Providence won’t be able to pull a Ryan Gomes and land an in-state Connecticut kid under the nose of UConn. This recruitment will have all the characteristics of a one-and-done type recruitment. It wouldn’t shock me if he becomes a Burger Boy (McDonald’s All American). He’s that good.
Other offers that speak to his talent include Alabama, Oregon, and Louisville.
Play Style
Toure is your pro sized wing with elite athleticism. Him playing high school basketball in Connecticut just isn’t fair to his competition.
He is a menace in the open court because he is such a freaky athlete. His gait in transition is something to behold. He plays well above the rim. He can also handle the ball effectively in the open court because he is so much quicker than his opposition.
He has a beautiful jumper. His release point is really high, which will suit him well in college and beyond. This also allows him the ability to finish amongst the trees from the foul line in.
He rebounds very well for his size. While not a bulky wing and strength and muscle will need to be added over the next year, his athleticism and length allow him to be a significant contributor from the wing on the glass.
Due to his size, he can finish over and above his defenders at the rim while also evaluating on the perimeter to get the looks he wants.
The comp I see is Stephon Castle.

Fit With Providence
Wherever Toure goes, he’s starting Day 1. Thus, you think about Toure at Providence and see a 2-4 line-up of Harrell/Mela, Toure, and Jones. The wing at Providence is probably the deepest position, but he’s too good to not be starting.
Providence right now doesn’t have enough guys who can beat their man off the dribble 1 on 1. Toure has the creativity to do so in the half-court set.
The Friars need guys who can create their own looks, especially in this NBA style offense. Toure is that and would open up for the floor for shooters like Barron, Fernandez, and Harrell.
Summary
English’s seat is warm heading into this offseason. It’s not scorching hot because his teams have dealt with injuries, but also because he’s shown to be one of the best recruiters Providence has had in quite some time.
If English were to land Toure, which doesn’t seem realistic as of this writing, it’d further cement English as one of the top recruiting head coaches in the nation.

Folks can understandably point out flaws in his career as PC head coach to date, but those same critics must objectively also point out how talented of a recruiter he is.
I don’t think PC wins this recruitment, but I also didn’t think that when he went into SEC country and scooped up Jamier Jones. Anything can happen, and I commend English and staff for not shying away from a battle with the preeminent program in the nation and hometown school.
