Crier Recruiting Corner- Introducing Robert Morris F Alvaro Folgueiras

The Friars are reshaping their roster in a significant way. Since April, the Friars have brought in Jason Edwards, Jaylin Sellers, DaQuan Davis, Cole Hargrove and Stefan Vaaks, but they aren’t done yet. They are looking at a slew of players in the portal to come in and be their starting 4-man. One of those players is a 6-9 sophomore from Robert Morris Alvaro Folgueiras.

We detail his game and how he’d be the fit as the starting four man for the Providence Friars.

Folgueiras is a native of Malaga, Spain and started his career there prior to moving to the states for his last year of high school at DME Academy in Daytona Beach, FL.

Folgueiras went to Robert Morris to play college basketball. While he didn’t put up huge numbers his freshman year, he truly blossomed into a great player this past season as a sophomore. He led the Colonels to a Horizon League championship, earning Horizon League POY along the way, and gave Alabama a run for their money in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Alvaro had a 15 point, 10 rebound double-double against the Tide. This is no small feat.

Alvaro is a very talented offensive player. He does most of his work at the rim, but is also a really good three point shooter (41.3% 3pt). Alvaro moves well for his size and shows decent athleticism. He moves well without the ball and is good in pick & roll/pick & pop situations.

What also makes him effective on offense is his ability to pass. He averaged 3.2 apg this past season with a 22% assist rate. Kim English loves to have big men that can pass. A facilitator in the front court like Folgueiras may offset the lack of a pass first point. This guy and Mela as a 3/4 facilitating an offense at times from the wing and frontcourt would be quite a watch.

On the defensive end Folgueiras is active on the glass and is an effective shot blocker as well. Certainly there will be concerns with him moving up in competition and guarding these elder statesmen of the Big East. The physicality will likely be an adjustment period for him, but it will be wherever he goes. With him being only a sophomore, I’d expect this aspect of his game to continue to improve.

This may be a tough commitment to secure as teams like Kentucky seem to be heavily involved. With Reed Bailey going to Indiana, the Wildcats are still looking to get a big man. However, if Folgueiras can land in Providence he would be an excellent addition.

Ironically, whomever chooses Kentucky out of Folgueiras and Dioubate, the other may end up defaulting to becoming a Providence Friar.
