The Pursuit of a Point Guard – The Missing Piece of the 2025 Class

With Jayden Pierre entering into his junior year, alongside a one year rental of grad transfer point guard Bensley Joseph, there is a clear need for the “next-in-line” at point guard for Kim English and the Providence Friars. With Oswin Erhunmwunse manning the frontcourt, Jamier Jones owning the “big wing” spot, and Jaylen Harrell potentially coming on board as the shooting guard, the obvious remaining need in the 2025 class is a pure point guard. In this article, we’ll analyze why being the point guard in this class is so appealing and who are some names to know in the 2025 class.

2025 Point Guard – The Sales Pitch

With the two commitments on board in the 2025 class, who are both elite Top 30 prospects in the 2025 class, it must be incredibly appealing if you are a 2025 point guard to play alongside them. The 2025 roster will contain, at a minimum, the following players: Jayden Pierre, Corey Floyd Jr., Rich Barron, Justyn Fernandez, Ryan Mela, Jamier Jones, Eli DeLaurier, Oswin Erhunmwunse, Anton Bonke, Christ Essandoko. The talent on this roster is as healthy as it has been in some time at PC. A point guard can look at the talent here and envision being the lead man of an upper echelon Big East Friar squad.

The sales pitch isn’t a difficult one for English. He can point to the lack of competition at the lead guard spot on the current roster. A 2025 point guard can come in to learn for a year under a senior Pierre and then take the reins from his sophomore year on. There was no high school point guard recruit in the 2024 class after the decomittment of Daquan Davis, and the 2023 point guard recruit, Garwey Dual, has since transferred. This gap in a lack of point guards on the roster will absolutely be a selling point.

Recruits of Interest

Please note I’ve listed point guard recruits where the recruit has mutually expressed interest post offer from Providence and/or has visited Providence. There are a host of 2025 offers that didn’t materialize in a visit or haven’t shown a ton of mutual interest in Providence, so I’m not including them in the list below.

Jalen Reece is the name I am most closely watching for Providence. He is the teammate of Jamier Jones, but is a talent in his own right. He is considered a 4 star, Top 100 talent. The Oak Ridge product is 76 overall in the 247 Composite.

Nigel James is a recruit that has visited Providence already, but his recruitment has been relatively quiet on the PC front. The Long Island Lutheran product is another Top 100 4 star recruit, slotting in at 84 nationally in the 247 Composite. James is considering a few other Big East schools as well. He is tight with Daquan Davis, and I’m personally not sure how that impacts Providence in his recruitment.

Jake West recently visited Providence on an unofficial visit. There is no offer from Providence yet, but this is a kid in Nova’s backyard. Under the previous regime at Villanova, you know Jay Wright would offer this kid, and he would be a thorn in the side of Providence for 4 years. We’ll see if Providence ends up pulling the trigger on an offer here. He is an under the radar recruit that is starting to catch some eyes.

Mikel Brown Jr. is a five star talent from Overtime Elite. Brown Jr. is 15th overall nationally and the second point guard recruit in his class. He is familiar with the Friar program, having already visited Providence, but I personally don’t consider him as a favorite to land in this class. I’d gladly have egg on my face, and Brown may see the appeal as a five star playing alongside other five stars in Oswin and Jamier.

Lino Mark visited during this past season. He is an electric backcourt player from California who plays alongside some elite talent in the AAU class. We’ll see how this recruitment progresses beyond the initial visit and interest. He is another 4 star, Top 125 talent, coming in at 125 overall in the Composite ranking.

Summary

In short, English should have his pick at point guard. A recruit traditionally wants early playing time guaranteed and a talented roster alongside him. Providence can offer both without having to put a “spin” on the pitch. The interesting dilemma that Providence may face is multiple point guard recruits wanting to commit in the 2025 class. There may be a situation where there is no longer room at the Inn for a recruit. It is not that English needs to pressure a recruit, but he can confidently state that this point guard slot is desired by many recruits. This should expedite a decision and get Providence their point guard of the future.
