Corey Floyd Jr. Offer – A Familiar Name

Providence recently reached out to 2022 New Jersey Guard Corey Floyd Jr. and offered him a scholarship. Does that name ring a bell? His father, Corey Floyd, played for the Friars for two years in the early 90s after attending a JuCo. Corey played sparingly during his two years on campus, but he appears to be excited about his son receiving a Friar offer.

Background on Corey Floyd Jr.

⁃ Class of 2022 Guard recruit from New Jersey

⁃ Plays for Roselle Catholic, a NJ and national powerhouse program. Roselle has recruits that will be playing for Xavier and Rutgers next year and traditionally produces multiple D1 recruits a year

⁃ Top 100 recruit

⁃ Offers from Auburn, Miami, Rutgers, Temple, LaSalle

After watching some game film, here are some immediate takeaways:

⁃ Physical guard who is well developed for someone his age. Wherever he chooses to go, he’ll have a college ready build from Day 1, ensuring he physically can play the moment he steps on campus. I can only imagine how he’ll look over the next two years as he continues to develop.

⁃ At his best when driving to the hoop. See point 1. His strength and physicality allows him to muscle through the lane and finish through contact at the rim

⁃ Reliable outside shot that will continue to improve. His strength is driving and attacking.

⁃ Playing for Roselle Catholic ensures there won’t be a massive adjustment to college for Corey from a talent standpoint, as this program is traditionally playing Top 25 national schedules. This isn’t like finding a solid recruit from a state that doesn’t produce a lot of high end basketball talent, and you have to project his skill set at the college level. Some college programs are likely envious of the talent in the Roselle Catholic gym.

Recruiting Competition:

⁃ For a 2022 recruit, Floyd Jr’s recruitment hasn’t taken off in the way you’d expect a recruitment to go for a Top 100 recruit from a dominant basketball program. Right before the Providence offer, Floyd Jr received a LaSalle offer. He also holds offers from Northeast programs UCONN and Rutgers. We’ll see if his recruitment goes national.

The Crier- So when I read that a Top 75 player from 2022 got an offer from his dad’s alma mater and that school was PC I was jacked up. You watch Corey Floyd Jr on tape you forget it’s a former player’s son and see this guy who is an absolute stud. BOC hit the nail on the head, physically this guy will be ready to go in the Big East from day one. He has pretty deep shooting range and has an ability to attack the rim with ease. The parents’ vote for which school their son chooses doesn’t tell you much but it is clear what Mr. Corey Floyd Sr feels about the Friars offer.

Everyone from Friartown wants to talk about Alex Caraban for 2022 and for good reason. He’s a great talent and is in our backyard; however, if the Friars can use the family connection to land Corey Floyd Jr he could be the future of Friartown.
