The Providence Crier

Before we get into the game, the Crier would be remiss if he didn’t bring up how great it was to be back at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center to watch the Friars basketball team. For an exhibition game, against a division II opponent on a Thursday night, the Friars had a solid turnout (north of 3k attendees) to see them live in action for the first time since the COVID pandemic. Based on what I saw tonight, the Friars should play their opener against Fairfield to close to a sellout crowd of fans ready to watch live hoops again. But lets dive into the takeaway’s to PC’s 95-71 win over Stonehill.

We’ve made it through the offseason, folks. It is college basketball time. We couldn’t be happier to put last year behind us. Hope springs eternal (or something like that).

The Crier and I preview below our thoughts on Big East Preseason Rankings, First Team All Conference, and individual accolades. We then put a Providence twist on things by naming individual awards for players on the PC team.

If you haven’t been following the news around college basketball recently, a ruling was passed by the NCAA that allows college athletes to be paid off their name, image, and likeness. Essentially, college athletes can be paid like professionals now (endorsement deals, sponsorships, trademarking, etc.).

While most are focusing on how positive this is for the specific student athlete (which it certainly is, without question), I’ve been thinking more and more about how this ruling is going to bring college basketball to heights it hasn’t reached since the 80’s and 90’s. In my humble opinion, we are about to experience a level of college basketball unlike any I’ve seen since I religiously started following college basketball in the early 2000’s.

For a fan base starving for good news on the recruiting front, the Friar fans have certainly been fed this week. On Monday, PC secured a pledge from 4-star guard out of NJ and Long Island Lutheran in Jayden Pierre.

The Friars finished off the week adding 7-foot 260 lb big man Christ Essandoko via his commitment today. The Friars three-man class of 2022 should provide the team with impactful pieces for a few years to come. Quante Berry was the first to pledge to PC, you can check out our write up on him here.

Well both worlds collided at the end of July, as it was announced that the Boston Celtics would be acquiring Kris Dunn in a three-team trade with the Atlanta Hawks and Sacramento Kings.

Quante Berry, the 2022 combo guard from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, earlier this week chose to commit to the Providence Friars over a slew of top tier programs. Berry is the first commit of the 2022 class (we’ll ignore a certain previous 2022 commitment that spurned the Friar fanbase).

It turns out the Friars will in fact use their last open scholarship for this year after all. Canadian guard Matteus Case announced on his Instagram page that he would be transferring to Providence College for the upcoming season. It was a tweet that surprised many Friar fans, as it wasn’t reported that Case was on PC’s radar since entering the portal two weeks ago.
