Providence Crier Player Preview Series: Jaylin Sellers is a Tone Setter for Friars

Before the transfer portal hot stove warmed up this offseason BOC stated that he wanted to see an attitude adjustment with the guys they bring in. Well he’s got that with the addition of Jaylin Sellers. Sellers chose the Friars this spring over the likes of Illinois, Cincinnati, and Georgetown. It seemed as if Illinois was in the catbird seat to land the 6-5 guard from UCF but were also pursuing international prospect Dame Sarr. With their infatuation with Sarr, Jaylin Sellers ended up at PC, while Sarr ended up committing to Duke instead. Illinois recruiting misfortune very well may have been a fortuitous moment for the Friars.

We detail how we think Sellers will impact the Friar roster and season below. Nationally, Sellers may be an unknown commodity, but we here at The Providence Crier think he has All-Conference potential for the Friars.

Sellers only played 3 games this past season for the Knights after having a sensational 2023-2024 campaign where he’d average almost 16 points per game and find himself on as a All-Big 12 honorable mention. He did this after two seasons with Ball State. Prior to transferring to UCF, Sellers had a strong campaign at Ball State, averaging 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 45% from 3.

Sellers has great size and frame from the guard spot and is a relentless driver to the hoop. He’s what you want your 2 guard to look like. There’s a reason BOC has comped him to Terrance Shannon Jr. on the court with his ferocious dunking ability, explosiveness, and physicality when driving to the tin. In the Big East, you need players that can play through contact, and Sellers has the build and ability to do that.

He’s also shown to be a capable shooter as well. He’s a career 37% shooter from three point albeit he only shot 30% on high volume in 23-24. What jumps out to me with his three point field goal percentage is that he’s 40% from 3 in 3 of his 4 collegiate seasons. We may be sleeping on Sellers as a legitimate deep ball threat. If he can find his stroke and be that career 37% three point shooter, it gives him the ability to not only knock down the deep ball, but have his defender respect that shot. By having that in his arsenal, he can pump fake and attack the rim.

When you watch his tape, the athleticism jumps out, which was on display with his thunderous poster in the Pitt exhibition. He also plays with an intensity and an edge that galvanizes his team.

The last thing we’ll mention offensively is that he can get out and run in transition. English wants to play with pace, and Sellers should fit this role well alongside Edwards. He can be the tip of the spear leading the fast break to try and get a quick bucket in transition or he can also be the trail man on a secondary break where his teammates find him for an open 3 look.

On the defensive end of things, you have to be excited about the potential of him and Corey Floyd Jr guarding people. They both have good size and athleticism and could be a nightmare on defense for the opposition. I personally cannot wait to see them D up this season, as we lamented last year about the lack of size on the perimeter defensively. That should not be an issue this year.

Scoring and defense aside, the biggest thing Sellers will bring this PC squad is an energy and toughness, two things the Friars seemed to sorely lack last season. Sellers could also be playing with a chip on his shoulder from not being recognized with any preseason accolades. That is what we want as Friar fans.

Expect Sellers to start on the wing for the Friars and average between 12 and 14 points a game. He will also give solid rebounding numbers and could very well find himself on an All-Big East team when it’s all said and done. We feel like what fans may have expected to get from Wesley Cardet last season they will get this season in Jaylin Sellers.

If Sellers can be another scoring option for the Friars, the offensive droughts from last year should be a thing of the past, as Providence now has reliable scoring options in Edwards, Sellers, and Powell. If he buys in defensively like we think he will, the defensive woes from last year should also be remedied.

We have high hopes for Sellers and think this was another masterful add by Kim English and staff.
