Another day, another shark gif, and another commitment for the Providence Friars. Per ESPN’s Jeff Borzello Ryan Sabol, a 6-3 guard from the University of Buffalo committed to Coach Hodgson and staff on Wednesday. Sabol had visited this week and quickly made his decision to join the Friars for his senior season.
We break down the commitment below.
We broke down the player earlier today in the following article:
It will be compelling to see what kind of role Sabol has with the Friars. His shooting ability is undeniable and will certainly see him having a role, but defensive metrics certainly question what kind of role he will exactly have.
At minimum we see Sabol as a shooter off the bench for the Friars. He was 7th in DI in three pointers made. However, Sabol had a -1.69 Defensive Bayesian Performance Rating last season per Evan Miya. He is a player that certainly has developed over his three seasons at Buffalo and Hodgson has a knack for finding unheralded guys having great success in his programs. If the Friars can play good team defense this upcoming season perhaps you can “hide” Sabol on that end and have him garner serious minutes.
At the end of the day though Sabol is a great add for Bryan Hodgson’s system.
So far the Friars have added an offensively minded and a defensively minded guard/wing in Dink Pate and Miles Byrd, respectively. They’ve added a well-balanced two way guard in Devin Vanterpool, a developmental lead guard piece in Gavin Hightower and now elite shooting in Ryan Sabol. The Friars now have six players on the roster and appear far from done. It’s a fun time in Friartown!
